It’s Breastfeeding Week: Know your rights for you and your baby.

In Uncategorized on August 5, 2010 at 4:47 pm

It is empowering to know what your legal rights are, no matter where your opinion stands. This will allow you to hold your grounds strong when facing conflict – unfortunately, breastfeeding provokes unnecessary commotion at times.
Issues come up even in the large franchise stores, including stores that advertise with much more visible breasts than most breastfeeding mamas who are out and about. No matter how confident you are in the choice that you are making, insensitive comments can bring you down and sometimes crush you. So know your rights ladies, and stand tall. For example, notice that in British Columbia, it says that it is only for the mother’s comfort if she wants a private space while she breastfeeds her baby. It’ll be nice if one day, we can all see who should be at the center of this ‘issue,’ – the mother, the baby, or the general public. Is it that hard to find a happy medium??

Celebrating Breastfeeding Week!

I currently breastfeed my 2-years-and-7-month-old son. Last night, as I was looking back at his pictures from pregnancy, I realized something. Having grown up in modern day society, I previously had no connection with babies, let alone breastfeeding mamas and babies.  So it was a learning curve for me (thank goodness mamas know how to learn fast with the help of intuition) once my son was born and snuggled at my breast. Ever since then, my breastfeeding dance has been ever-changing and growing.

At all times, it connected my son and I.  At certain times, it taught me patience. Positions have grown from cradle-hold only to stand-up-milk-bar style. Even appearance has gone from “post-breast-enhancement-surgery” look to lopsided. A number of times, it went from every couple of hours of long feedings to once every 10 minutes for a few hours.

As we grew, our breastfeeding duet has evolved.

In so many ways! Let our bodies prove it.
Studies have shown that mothers can identify their infants by smell just a few hours after giving birth. In 1995, researchers found that the odor produced by a fetus changes a pregnant mother’s urine, and even alters the odor of the mother herself.

Pheromones are made by the babies inside the bellies to sample the outside world in the amniotic fluid. It is also made by babies, trying to recognize their mother.

You will notice your baby sucking her/his little hands immediately postpartum, while trying to get to the breast. S/he is trying to find the nipple and recognize you..also because magically, you secrete the same fluid on your breasts then.
You were made for this.
