Yup, today we are talking hemorrhoids! a-ahemorrhoids

What the heck are they and how are they caused?

Here is the description from Wikipedia:

Hemorrhoids (AmE), haemorrhoids (BrE), hemerods, or piles are swelling and inflammation of veins in the rectum and anus. The anatomical term “hemorrhoids” technically refers to “‘Cushions of tissue filled with blood vessels at the junction of the rectum and the anus.”[1] However, the term is popularly used to refer to varicosities of the hemorrhoid tissue.

Increased straining during bowel movements caused by constipation or diarrhea may lead to hemorrhoids.[3] It is thus a common condition due to constipation caused by water retention in women experiencing premenstrual syndrome or menstruation.

Hypertension, particularly portal hypertension, can also cause hemorrhoids because of the connections between the portal vein and the vena cava which occur in the rectal wall—known as portocaval anastomoses.[4]

Obesity can be a factor by increasing rectal vein pressure. Poor muscle tone or poor posture can result in too much pressure on the rectal veins.

Pregnancy may lead to hypertension and increase strain during bowel movements, so hemorrhoids are often associated with pregnancy

What to do?

While I was  doing doula work full time I often saw mothers suffer with the uncomfortableness of hemorrhoids, not to mention what it was like for them when they were pushing!

So since we just got in a new all natural product that we love for dealing with this little problem, I thought I was post a blog about it and share my little secrets of the doula mamma trade !

Several years ago I had a client that was also a doula, she was pregnant with her first baby and had terrible hemorrhoids, I mean really bad{think grapes}!

So together we set out to discover everything we could about how to treat them, as we knew that her birth was coming up and we wanted to shrink her hemorrhoids as much as we could.

This is when we discovered, what she fondly referred to as “Butt crack” hahaha!

Here is what we did:                   a-atherawise11

Take one full package of all natural cotton, round eye makeup pads.

Fill up a spray bottle with:

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup of Witch Hazel

20 drops of Lavender

Spray each pad until wet but not soaking and place a small piece of wax paper or plastic wrap between each one and freeze!

Wen you are ready to use fold the pad in half or in a third and place directly on the hemorrhoids, leaving  it there until it is thawed and repeat.

We used these during her whole labour and by the time she was pushing they were quite shrunken and frozen!
